    dchassett,

It is at 4200 Wade Green Rd., Kennesaw, GA 30144.

If you enter your zip code here: http://directory.dogfoodadvisor.com/location it will show you good pet food stores in your area. Where in GA do you live?

    Thank you, Marie!

P.S. I found an AMAZING pet food store (mostly for cats and dogs), 5 min away from home, and they sell raw – Blue Ridge Beef, which sounds pretty local for Georgia. I am beyond pumped! It seems very affordable – 3-4lbs frozen ground meat, organs, bones, tripe, and eggs for $5-something! I am in love with this place, let alone the super affordable natural raw and dehydrated chews! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

    Shasta,

I see. Yeah, I will start one at a time and add 1-2 tsp.

I will also try adding more lean meat (bully sticks, raw, or cooked) to his food (and reduce the kibble a bit, of course).

Thanks so much for the advise to all, if anyone has any more suggestions, please feel free to share, and I will let you know what works when I find it out! πŸ™‚

Oi, forgot to note – I am currently out of bully sticks (waiting on my next batch), but I usually give him about 1/2 or more of a 6-inch bully stick to chew on (and eat) every other day (on days with no coconut butter), and after that his stools are much softer, I think from the pure meat that the bully stick is (albeit dehydrated).

Oh, and very importantly – how much pumpkin/yoghurt/kefir/flax seed meal do you all think I should give him? Again, he eats about 1 cup kibble/day, in 4 feedings, and is 11.5lbs. He gets 1 teaspoon of coconut butter every other day at breakfast.

I could freeze a mix of yoghurt and pumpkin with some cinnamon and feed it as treats, or make him “soups” with it – whichever you think he will absorb better and have a better effect.

    Shasta,

Thanks for the advice, it is actually helpful! I think I will start with some pumpkin, then watch him for a while, then add yoghurt and/or kefir and some ground flax seeds. And watch again, lol. THEN if necessary I will add probiotic pills. I always want to try the “all-natural” way first.

Also, he seems to drink enough water (imo), but I could try to give him more. When he gets his coconut butter every other day, he always gets it as a “soup” – his kibble, a teaspoon or so of coconut butter, and lukewarm water to cover about 3/4 of the kibble level in the bowl. This is so the butter melts all into the kibble and the kibble releases some appetizing aroma – some weird, potentially untrue crap I made up to justify the water, but in reality, it is in fact to get him more hydrated. He loves his “soups”, even if it is just kibble and water, so maybe I can give him “soup” once a day for extra hydration, plus the hydration of the wet pumpkin and yoghurt/kefir.

I tried putting a bit of apple cider vinegar in his water, but he didn’t seem fond of it, lol. I hear it also helps digestion, so maybe I can try to hide it in his “soups”.

    Thank you, sue66b and pitbullmomma!

I am guessing it is the fiber in the pumpkin that will help him?

Also, I always thought that grain free causes softer stools than grain-inclusive, and this is his second time on all-grain-free (but the first time was just for a month). So maybe I can add a kibble that has a little bit of grains in it… I had some coupons so I stocked up on Earthborn Holistic Grain Free and Vets Choice HHE, but 2 of my HHEs do have grains in them.

Come to remember, Bruno (my pup) did good on Blue Buffalo Wilderness Puppy 11lbs mixed with 4lbs of HHE Original (with grain), I think those were the perfect stools – firm enough, but not super hard.

So maybe until he finishes his current blend and starts on Earthborn GF and HHE (with grain), I can add some pumpkin and/or any other additives that may help?

Hm… I currently feed an all-grain-free kibble blend of 15lbs of Dr. Tim’s, 4 lbs of Nutrisca chicken, and 4lbs of Vets Choice Holistic Health Extension, all mixed in. He gets about 1 cup of that mix/day, in four feedings or so.

I have heard that pumpkin firms up stools, do you think I should still give it? He has a bowel movement 3 times a day.

I could try to add some fiber, maybe ground flax seed and/or yoghurt to his food? He gets coconut butter at breakfast every other day too. For treats, I am currently using some freeze-dried liver ones, frozen pineapple chunks, baby carrots, kale stems, or his kibble. We have just started adding some raw meaty bones once a week (for now), and I got some great coupons for free canned food, so I will be adding that in too in months to come.

Wow, it has been a while since I have looked at this topic – never thanked Patty for the useful information, so thank you, Patty!

Well, I finally managed to somewhat comfort my now husband (in my avatar, we got married on Friday), who is usually worried about feeding Bruno (also in my avatar) raw, but today we had a first real venture into it with a piece of pork neck bone and meat. Bruno loved it, and seems quite alright on it. I have 2 more pieces and plan to give them in the next 2 weeks (once a week basically), and see how that goes, and if he continues to be fine, I will see if I can increase it to maybe 2 times a week to 3. I also plan to introduce recreational marrow bones (the small ones, due to fatty marrow) sometime soon and change them once every couple of weeks or so, not so sure about that yet.

But yes, first real all-raw meal was served today and liked a lot. We seem to be in good shape for the occasional raw! πŸ™‚

Everyone, thanks so much for the input.

I think first thing I need to do is go to the store and see if they do match others’ coupons. If so, based on the prices of Victor and Weruva, it will be one of these 2.

If not, I think I may try Wellness Core Wild Game. The only reason I want a chicken-less kibble is because Bruno’s (my pup) foods are lined so that when his current chicken-based mix runs out, he will get a fish-based one, then a buffalo-and-lamb-based one, then chicken-based one again, so I want to get him something non-chickeny for after the next time he has chicken.

But I have been eying Weruva 60 and 90 and most of the Victor Grain-free ones, so I hope I can use my coupon there. πŸ™‚

    Thanks for all the input.

Oh my! This may sound silly, but I JUST found a boutique-type pet store 1.7 miles from my home that carries Victor and Weruva! Now… Provided that they match competitors’ (Petland’s) coupons, my dilemma is now:
    Victor
    Weruva
    Wellness Core
    Merrick GF

    Which one do you think?

I give my Bruno a teaspoon of coconut butter (dried unsweetened shredded coconut flesh, processed in the food processor until it becomes butter-like) every other day with his breakfast. He is super soft and shiny. I love it! I personally love coconut-anything, and this coconut butter is what goes on my toast every other day as well. But I can imagine pure (unsweetened) coconut water would be good for pups too.

    Akari,

I see. I may just give TOTW or Canidae Pure a chance. 2 small bags it is, and just hope Bruno takes to them well. In any case, if not, I will toss them ***** and not buy again.

Yeah, I was even thinking of going back to my old apartment complex and scouting for some more coupons or just asking Petland to deliver them to my new apartment complex, BUT, Bruno can’t possibly eat all this food by the time the coupons expire and I can’t possible store 2 years’ worth of food under my sink along with my own belongings… But, if I do get more coupons, I will surely give them to friends with pups and ask local stores such as PetSmart, PetCo, etc. if they can match them… OOOH! If so, I would stock up on Wellness Core and as long as it’s good by mid-late 2015, I AM GETTING IT! lol. I want to put Bruno on Wellness so bad, but for as little cash as possible! So if these coupons work, booyah!

P.S. How can I post a picture on here? I wanted to show you guys the coupons, maybe you can print them out and ask your local Petland for a similar deal.

Crazy4Cats, thanks for the info on BB. I have used it before on my Bruno with great success, no problems whatsoever, but I do understand that it could be risky. I will keep it in my rotation though, and just watch closely for signs of any ailment in my pup.

As for the rest, Canidae Pure (the GF) and TOTW are foods I am REALLY eying right now, lol. It is a risk though, but my friend feeds the red meat and the lamb ones of TOTW with no problem to her lab… So we’ll see, I will ponder upon it some more.

Rambunctious, the coupons I get are from my local Petland and they are for 1 free (4-lb) bag of Vets Choice Holistic Health Extension – HHE (up to $11.99 value, can be applied to any size bag), and also:
$10 off of any purchase of $25 or more
$50 off of any purchase of $200 or more
$100 off of any purchase of $300 or more
    store wide.

I think they sent those coupons to one particular apartment complex where I used to live, and I still have some from before I moved… I wish they sent them to my current one, I may need to ask them if they could please do that, lol.

But yes, with those coupons I am stocking up on Earthborn Holistic – the GF ones (3 bags @ 14lbs each), and HHE (3 bags @ 4lbs each), and if I get two 4lb bags of TOTW or Canidae Pure, I will have 62 lbs of food for $80. If instead I get one 14lb or 15lb bag of something more trusted (like HHE or Earthborn again), I can have 68-69lbs of food for the same $80. I would say either route to go is quite cost-efficient, plus, my 11.5-lb terrier mix, who eats about 1 cup/day (or less) will be set for at least the whole year, I think, with this much food! He is still working on a Dr. Tim’s-Nutrisca-HHE GF mix that he has a bunch of, at least 1-2 months’ worth of, so yeah… he will be pretty good on food for not a lot of money, I just hope he likes Earthborn!

This is probably ignorant, but are Blue Buffalo and Canidae also Diamond products?

Akari, to your question, I would guess that you just need to proceed with caution for any Diamond food you choose to get.

I checked my local Petland and since I still have their coupons (to be fully used by the end of the month, for what looks like a lifetime supply of food (62lbs) for Bruno (for $80), I was, and still am, REALLY tempted to get him some TOTW. I just love how the recipe sounds, plus how the price tag looks… I need to ask them where the TOTW came from though.

    Shasta,

I wish I had an answer, but I just want to comment so I can see if anyone else does, as I am in a similar situation.

Our (my fiance and I’s) roommate calls himself a “dog whisperer” and believes that he knows all there is to know about dog behavior and health. He advises his friends with dogs to shy away from foods containing by-products, which is great, but THIS is where his knowledge of good and bad dog foods ends! He has been feeding his hound mix Hill’s Science Diet all her life, she is going on 4 years now, and I am seeing some signs of cow hocking in her hind feet. I have been burning to shove this website in his face and give him solid facts on why what he feeds his dog is bad, but he is the type of know-it-all that would not even look at it, even if I tie him to a chair with this website on. He is just convinced that he is feeding his dog the best food out there. At least he has switched her between the lamb and chicken flavors a couple times, for protein’s sake… But still… It’s the Science Diet crap…

So, long story short, I don’t even know if a food switch would help his dog’s legs at this point, but I would be curious if anyone knows how to subtly tell a person that they don’t in fact know it all and that they should research what they feed their baby… Although I can see how it can be a VERY touchy matter (i.e. “don’t tell me how to care for my dog, you’ve only had yours for 6 months and I have had dogs all my life” – which he has said to me once before).

Side note – even his vet recommends this site, and brands other than the Science Diet (I saw his dog’s annual check-up sheet, which thankfully, she seems in good overall health so far), but he still wouldn’t look into another food. He can TOTALLY afford top notch brands too.

    Patty,

Oh, I didn’t know that! I will certainly watch how much I give Bruno. He hasn’t had any for over a month now. Do you know what the vitamin A and/or D surplus can cause and what symptoms of it I need to watch for?

    Thanks!

For about a month I was giving my 12-ish lb Jack-Rat Terrier a tsp of mushed up canned cod liver in fish oil every other day with his breakfast. He LOVED it! On the days of no fish liver and oil he got a mix of cooked and raw beef liver. He looked and felt amazing, and nowadays he is on raw, unrefined coconut butter (ground up coconut flesh and oils) every other day with breakfast. He loves that too, and people keep commenting on how soft he is.

His coat has been very shiny since I switched him to Blue Buffalo Wilderness Puppy a month after my boyfriend and I got him, but I am not sure if it was that food or the fish skins he got in combination with it. So if fish oil worries you, you can always try the Beams or Wishes by THK (I think?). I need to get Bruno some more, and more cod liver, and alternate them and the coconut butter every few days. πŸ™‚

    Shasta,

When I researched foods/spices toxic to dogs, I never saw nutmeg listed, so I assumed it was ok. But you never know, and research keeps finding new stuff, such as I read somewhere that rosemary (present in many dry kibble and treat recipes, and not marked as bad by Dr. Mike), is now considered dangerous for dogs. Go figure.

In any case, I like to use spices for their benefits more so than flavor for my dog, i.e. turmeric is a natural antibiotic, cinnamon helps with weight maintenance and is good for the heart (so I have read), ginger helps with carsickness (which my pup often gets), etc. Also, aside from the Doggie Pizza Treats, the other 2 recipes are fit for human consumption, so Bruno didn’t really get TOO much of them, and definitely not too much all at once. But thank you for the input, and I will try to keep myself up to date on new findings on spices regarding dogs! πŸ™‚

P.S. If your dog treat business takes off, please start and online “store” – I would love to give Bruno some of your treats! Or, if you live near Atlanta/Marietta/Kennesaw, GA, let me know if you take the treats to any local Farmers’ Market or some similar place where I could buy them!

Hello, all, and Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it!

Just wanted to pitch in with my happiness and joy of a Christmas “gift”!

This month I was so happy to collect my local Petland’s coupons from the trash that people did not want – I got over 20 I am sure. They have $11.99-off a bag of Vets Choice Holistic Health Extension and also $10-off $25-and-over purchase store-wide. The thing is, they expire in February. So, I just gave them as gifts to my friends with pooches, hoping that they would switch them from the lower-quality food they feed to the 4-star Vets Choice and Earthborn Holistic.

Speaking of, I kept 3 of the coupons for myself so I will be getting 14-lb bags each of Earthborn Holistic’s Primitive Natural, Coastal Catch, and Plains Feast, and 4-lb bags each of the Vets Choice Original, Lamb and Rice, and Grain Free. This way Bruno will be set for all of 2014, should the expiration dates on the bags permit! I am so excited! πŸ™‚

    Happy Holidays!

    Akari,

I see, those foods sound good! I really want to try Canidae GF, Wellness Core, Back to Basics, Victor, Earthborn Holistic, Wysong 60 or 90, sometime soon, lol! But small dogs take a bunch of time to eat through big batches. I have introduced him to Nutrisca today and he seems to enjoy it quite well. I will bring in Vet’s Choice Holistic Health Extension GF tomorrow, and Dr. Tim’s on Wednesday. Then mix them all in a small batch and feed him that for 1-2 weeks to make sure he is good on it, and then mix the rest of the bags together.

I actually took Bruno to the vet today and they said he is in tip-top shape. He is at a good weight, which may just be his ideal weight, with maybe a pound, 2 max in growth potential, so when I used the Dog Food Advisor Dog Food Calculator for his ideal weight for 11/12/13 lbs, for an Active dog, the discrepancy was between 1.03 of a cup to 1.10 of a cup, for a 404 kcal/cup for his upcoming food mix. He is a fairly active little guy and goes to the dog park at least 3 times a week or more, and runs around the house and goes on walks/jogs on the days he doesn’t go to the dog park. He usually doesn’t always finish his full cup anyway, but sometimes he does, so I think about a cup for him should be ok… I will keep watching his weight and development, though, and adjust as necessary.

    Hello, everyone!

I know it has been almost a month since Bruno’s cooked bone incident, but I just wanted to share that he has been doing just fine since it. The wheezing he had must have been some of my hair/threads from his dog bed that he must have eaten and they had gotten stuck on his throat. He keeps pooping hairs/strings all the time and they pass fine. The bone passed too, within the week, I believe. Some of it may have digested, and some bits passed just fine. I was on his stool like a crazy person, mushing it up to feel for bits (through the baggie!).

But it all went well, I learned my lesson, and he will not get a cooked bone ever again.

Thank you for all your advice! πŸ™‚

The only time my dog’s kibble has really FULLY absorbed liquid, quickly, is when I heated it up and poured it in his bowl with kibble, then set outside for a couple of minutes to cool down (it was a cold evening). The kibble was plumped up and soft, most of the liquid was “gone” (in the kibble). But more often than not, I just use warm liquid, and the kibble doesn’t plump up, my dog just drinks up the water and eats the kibble. I’d also say, don’t drain out the water even if it’s not absorbed, because of what Patty said. πŸ™‚

    Akari,

This is exciting – are you looking at calories in order to determine the number of cups you will feed him (I assume Dweezle is a boy)?

Bruno is almost done with his Blue Buffalo Wilderness Puppy-Vets Choice Holistic Health Extension Original, he should be done by the end of next week. I will start mixing in his new batch of Dr. Tim’s Kinesis GF-Nutrisca-Vets Choice Holistic Health Extension GF starting tomorrow, and see how he likes it. I’m excited to get him on it! πŸ™‚

I also checked Wellness Core prices at Pet Smart, but they don’t have it on sale now, so I will wait. I have at least 3 months to go before I have to worry about more food for Bruno.

    Dog Oatmeal Cookies

This is my very first endeavor at homemade dog treats, so the measurements may not be totally exact…

    Ingredients:
1/2 – 2/3 cup cooked (baked/boiled/microwaved) sweet potato (with or without skin)
1 medium carrot (or 3-4 baby carrots), raw – shredded
1/2 cup chunky β€œraw” peanut butter (ground up plain roasted peanuts. If you can’t find any, peanut butter with no or little added salt/sugar will do)
3/4 cup unbleached flour (or whole wheat one, or brown rice one)
    1/2 cup plain oatmeal
    1 medium/large egg
    1 tsp brown sugar
    dash of honey
    1 tsp ginger powder
    1 tsp cinnamon
    1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

    Directions:
    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
    2. In a large bowl, mix all ingredients until a homogenous mixture forms (if mixture is too wet, add some more flour or oatmeal gradually until mixture is sticky but not at all runny)
    3. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper or foil.
    4. Using a small ice-cream scoop, scoop balls from the mixture and place about 1 inch apart on cookie sheet. You can press them down and shape up in whatever shape you like
    5. Bake for about 20-30 min, or until golden brown-ish.
    6. Let cool down and feed to beloved pooches.

These can also be refrigerated for about a week or frozen for 4-5 months.

    Healthy Doggie Pizza Treats

    Ingredients:

1/2 Best Bully Sticks Chicken Sausage
1/2 Best Bully Sticks Bacon Sausage
1 Best Bully Sticks Beef Sausage
    1 Dried Fish Skin (optional)
    3 strips Duck Jerky (optional)
    1 medium carrot
    1 radish
    2 celery stalks
    1 egg
2/3 cup shredded cheese of your choice (I used Colby Jack)
1 small low sodium beef bouillon cube dissolved in 1/4 cup hot water
1/4 cup tomato paste or tomato puree (made of tomatoes and water only, no sugar or other added ingredients)
1 teaspoon olive oil or bacon fat
2/3 cup unbleached flour (whole wheat or brown rice flour would work too)
    1 tablespoon dry parsley leaves
    1 tablespoon dry rosemary
    1 tablespoon turmeric powder

    Directions:

    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

    2. In a food processor or blender, grind up beef, bacon, and chicken sausages as well as the duck jerky and fish skin to fine powder/tiny crumbs. Fish skin and jerky may remain a bit stringy, but that is okay.

    3. Pour dry meat flour mix in a mixing bowl.

    4. In a food processor or blender grind until finely chopped the carrot, radish, and celery.

    5. Pour in the mixing bowl with the meat crumbs.

    6. Add all remaining ingredients.

    7. Using a spatula or your hands, mix until a homogenous wet mix forms.

    8. Pour mix on a cookie sheet or pizza pan lined with parchment paper and even out until about 1/4 inch thick.

    9. Bake for 30 minutes.

    10. Take out, let cool down just a bit then cut up in desired treat sizes.

    11. Serve to beloved pooch(es).

P.S. This is where I got my dry sausages for the “meat flour” from: http://www.bestbullysticks.com/home/bbs/search?keywords=sausage&submit.x=-959&submit.y=-93

I see. Chicago is neat too, it is one of the places my boyfriend and I have thought about moving to.

Patty, this is neat! Does he still live there? If not, is his house up for rent by any chance, lol? We are looking for a house to move into this December. But yes, the area is nice, close to KSU where a lot of my mental efforts are directed to, lol!

Btw, Kingsland, GA is the total diagonal point from Kennesaw, GA, which is where I live, lol… But I’ve been to Cumberland Island, GA, and it seems like a nice area! πŸ™‚

Yeah yeah… Tech glitches! But yeah, maybe the cod liver oil, as well as the magnesium and zinc could be good for Haley, but I think more knowledgeable people can answer your question. So don’t take my assumption as advice, lol.

    Akari,

You are my couponing guru!!! πŸ™‚

Thanks so much for the info! I will certainly get on this, as I plan to obtain some Wellness Core, Victor GF (they have awesome cheap samples on their website http://www.victorpet.com/ ), and maybe some Back to Basics for Bruno’s after-next batch of mixed food (the upcoming batch will consist of Dr. Tim’s Kinesis GF, Nutrisca, and Vets Choice GF, total of 23 lbs of food, should last him a good 4-ish months).

But yes, thanks so much for the info again, and hope Petland does the trick for you to get bunches of cheap, good dog food! πŸ™‚
