My dogs have pancreatitis history; therefore, they need low fat dog food. Of 9 best low fat dry food recommended by DFA, 7 are grain free. That leaves 2 brands with very high carbs. They are not from big 4.

You are correct that all dog food have something wrong with it. The lastet is that Hillā€™s Science Diet prescription food iD have elevated Vitamin D. Itā€™s hard to imagine.

I donā€™t use Wellness Core because of the high fiber % and some other reasons from a study. In human food, we know that we are buying – chicken, beef, fish, green beans, potatoes… because we buy each ingredient separately. In dog food, we buy kibbles and there are at least 20-30 ingredients in the kibbles. Do anybody really know what we are buying? Who is responsible to verify those ingredients and what nutrients are left in the kibbles after the high temperature production?

I guess thatā€™s why people are suggesting to rotate through a few different brand of kibbles so the dogs will not be getting the same toxins day in and day out.

One of my dog had an episode of pancreatitis almost two years ago. Yellow mucus stool probably means irrigate GI and too much fat.

Since then, I learned how to read the labels closely. You have to calculate fat content in dry matters in order to be to be accurate. DFA also did some calculations for you. You can do a search on DFA and you will get a list of recommend low fat dog food. My dog has been on Annamaet Lean and I am still looking for another brand to rotate.

If you have time, mix in some boil chicken and fresh vegetables to the kibbles. Fresh whole food are the best. I also keep a few Hills science diet prescription can food on hand as go-to food.

    Hi Susan,

    Thank you for the reply.

Yes. I have tried to give my dogs Ziwi Peak Raw. The young one is not interested. The older ones like it; however, they had pancreatitis in the past so I really need to watch for the fat content.

I have ordered K-9 Natural Green Lipped Mussells in the past per your recommendation. Thank you! 🙂 They do like it but the supplier often ran out of stock. I have tried Honest Ktchen Green and Blue Lipped Mussells as the alternative until I found that has a really high heavy metal rating. I found New Zealand Green Lipped Mussells in grocery store frozen seafood section. I have been given them that and they also like it. Maybe human grade food is a little safer?

For the young one, I currently rotate between Horizon Legacy and Go! Fit and Free(both Made in Canada) kibbles as the base. I add whatever meat, fish, eggs, and vegetable that we are eating to the kibbles with some warm homemade broth. I tried to use organic meat when is possible. I also use FreshPet and sardines as the topper just to add some smell.

Have you try I and Love and You brand?

Itā€™s just frustrating that we donā€™t know which food will be recalled next. We wake up in the morning, see the news, and said thank God thatā€™s not the food that I am feeding my dogs. Life go on as usual until the next recall. Thatā€™s not the way it should be. Isnā€™t it?

    Hi Susan,

Wellness Core Reduced fat formula has overall rating of 3/5. It has 3/5 in heavy metal, and 1/5 in process and by-product containmination. Itā€™s not so great. There must be something better than that that I can use to rotate. I can deal with low ingredient quality by adding human grade or organic food to the base, but there is nothing I can do with the heavy metal and the contamination.

I know many people donā€™t believe the test. As far as I am concern, there is nothing to lose by not using those products.

I am looking for something with fat content less than 12% fat. I believed Farmina is around 16%. Thank you though.

It is Wellness Core Grain Free Reduced Fat formula that I was talking about.

I know Annamaet has high carbs. I use 50% of Annamaet Lean kibbles as the base and rotate adding homecook fish, organic chicken, beef liver, eggs, fresh vegetables, and filtered warm water to the kibbles. I am still looking for other low fat kibbles to rotate, but have not be able to find any good one yet. Any suggestions? I am leaning towards Canadian made kibbles.

Your correct. Itā€™s not just the fish has the high toxins. I read somewhere that even human grade rice, oats, grits… are high in arsenic.

Itā€™s insane that we canā€™t trust the ingredients of the dog food. I feel like we are just waiting for next recall to happen any day now, and thatā€™s already too late and after the fact.

Everyone is telling me Wellness has good products. One of my dogs has episodes of pancreatitis and the other one needs lose some weight. So I tried Wellness Core Reduced Fat formula just to give them a break from Annamaet Lean. I must said I didnā€™t noticed much difference. However, I decided to stop using Wellness Core after I read a report stating this product has higher rating in heavy metal and containment & lower rating in purity. I thought there are so many dog food on the market. Why take a risk?

I have the same concern. Go Fit! and Horizon Legacy are both made in Canada. My dog is doing good on it. However, the new concern is the grain free kibbles. I am also trying to find something else to rotate.

    Hi Susan,

Any suggestions on low fat senior dog food for my schnauzer with pancreatitis history? They currently are taking Annamaet Grain Free Lean Recuced Fat kibbles. I also add some chicken, vegetables, salmon oil, and sometimes sardines in the water to the kibbles.

    Thank you in the advance!

Just when we thought grain free dog food are good and now this? What should we do? Switch back to the regular dog food? I was also adding some wet dog food and I am now thinking about BPA. Do I need to worry about that?
