If your dog is not allergic to grains then it's not necessarily bad. It is just not their natural diet, and is hard to digest as they need alot of amylase (enzyme) to be broken down. As dogs are not meant to eat alot of grain/carbs, they do not make alot of amylase. So...adding a digestive enzyme to help digestion would be a good supplement to give while on a grain diet or most kibble diets as kibble is high in carbs. Undigested carbs make gas!! Grains are also "inflammatory" foods. You can add psyllium powder (or capsule if your dogs takes pill) to the meals for fiber.

Read the info (or watch the video) on the probiotics and digestive enzyme supplements.

I feed a low carb diet as I don't want to stress my dogs' pancreases out - I'm thinking long term. I also give them digestion supplements with kibble, but not with raw.

I will have to check those out. Thanks. Are all grains bad? I realized looking through the site that the 1T of bran (I said barley earlier but its bran) meal that I am giving him for his fiber might be countering what I am trying to accomplish?? I get it in bulk at Whole Foods.
I originally started using it with the Blue Buffalo Evolutionary diet (chicken) and it seemed to be working pretty well. Being "cheap" we did our research and found that Kirkland's was considered a good dog food. We have tried Royal Canin also and it still seemed like the Blue was the best. Going to take the barley meal out of the food and see how that works. We still have many weeks of food left and if the problems arent resolved I will check out the other brands. Thanks for the help!

Janaenanae - I had the same problems with the puppy formula. The itching and scooting became basically a daily occurance before I finally got my Storm into the vet to have his glands expressed. I immediately took him off grains and chicken, as the vet thought he might have allergies and those are the 2 most likely allergens. She was right!! He's been fine since, no scooting or itching, and has not been back to the vet. I changed him to Performatrin Ultra Grain Free originally, but now have gone potato-free, too (thanks to the info on this site!).. he's on NutriSource Grain Free Lamb, but I plan to rotate that with Pulsar Fish (supposedly there's a Horizon Fish on the, err, horizon too, which I will use instead), maybe Darford, probably the Innova Prime when it starts selling here, and will occassionally rotate in the Performatrin Ultra Grain Free even though it has potatoe (it did amaaaazing things for his coat and muscle tone!).

Hope this helps!!
